She is self-taught in a range of skills varying from illustrating, sewing and painting to photography. “I have been inspired by the colours, lifestyle and harmony in Thailand within the chaos of Asia. While I document through the photographic lens the Phuket I see, I paint and sketch throughout the Phuket I feel.”

30 October – 26 November East meets West, Silkscreen Art by Cindy Shaw 30 October – 26 November 2008 East - West Exchange, Silkscreen Art by Cindy Shaw
Cindy Shaw signed up for art classes after she broke a bone in her foot and couldn't work. A class in silk painting ignited her passion for dyes on fabrics and paper. She studied Deconstructed Silk Screening with Kerr Grabrowski and has experimented with the medium ever since. Cindy made many new discoveries by printing with unusual items such as corrugated cardboard, leaves, lace, handmade stencils and found objects.

“I am always amazed at the results and never fail to be thrilled when I lift the screen! The emerging exciting layers of color and texture are just wonderful.”

27 November – 7 January 2009 Léa Silk, hand-woven and hand-painted Silk by Léa Laarakker-Dingjan 27 November 2008 – 7 January 2009 Silk, the Art of Life hand-woven and hand-painted Silk by Léa Laarakker-Dingjan
Living in Thailand since 1987, Lady Léa Laarakker-Dingjan is an international artist, renowned for her freehand designs on Thai silk. Applying the “hot-blow” technique, Léa paints freehand without first sketching any pattern. She combines modern, avant-garde design on plain-woven rough and smooth silk, manufactured following century-old local techniques and tradition, building an artistic bridge between old and new as well as East and West. The Ban Reng Khai Foundation was set up by Léa and others to support the silk weavers and villagers of Ban Reng Khai village in Isan.

Léa has been knighted and has received several international awards for her work, including UNESCO Seals of Excellence.

Tranquillity', by Kathy Manthei 8 January - 9 February. 8 January – 9 February 2009 Tranquility, paintings by Kathy Manthei
Thailand has been the home and creative space for American artist Kathy Manthei since 1998. Exhibiting her work internationally, she has attracted private collectors throughout the world.

Kathy’s unique repertoire of acrylic mixed media paintings on canvas is enhanced by layers of acrylic paint, Chinese ink, metals —especially copper and gold leaf— and paper. Recently she began working with encaustic (an ancient painting technique using molten beeswax) and acrylic transfers. Full of symbolism, each piece tells its own story of peace, contemplation and beauty in its simplicity.

PROJECT NEPTUNE is an expressive arts therapy program Kathy developed for survivors of the December 26th Tsunami, throughout Thailand’s affected provinces. She is Volunteer Arts Program Coordinator at the Life Home Project, a shelter for HIV positive women and their children in Phuket.
